I am hoping some of the hockey fans here can assist me with a problem I am facing.
I grew up in Port Huron and was an avid Flags fan until they folded. I have been in Saginaw, since 1994. Since I have been here I have followed the local CoHL, UHL (the UHL product was terrible here) and now OHL teams, but I never forgot how hockey was played back in the days of the Flags, Gears, Generals, Goaldiggers, etc. . . That was great hockey.
I finally got started last April on a historical book about the Flags, one which I have wanted to write for years (The Times Herald ran a preview story about it back in April). The book will take about another year to complete, but I have been interviewing, and scheduling interviews with, former Flags, Port Huron media people and players from other IHL teams of the 70s. So far the interviews have been great and I think this book will make for a great read, especially for PH hockey fans.
I have run into a major problem. I want this book to be very visual and had planned on using scanned copies of game photos from Times Herald articles I had squirreled away from the 1970s and 1980-81 until the team folded. Last week the Times Herald denied me permission to purchase the rights to re-print any old Times Herald photographs and/or articles I have collected. This is a big setback for this project as I had set aside space for about 50 photos and some re-printed TH articles I wanted to use. This will certainly detract from the book's "local flavor." To compensate for this loss of potential material, I am seeking unique Flags game photos, if anybody has any they would like to see used in this book.
If anybody is interested in providing some photos, you can reach me through my website (www.hockeycop.com) and I will e-mail you back. Keep in mind I will need the permission of the owner of any material that is re-printed in order to use it. Several out-of-town newspapers have agreed to let me purchase rights to use old photos from their publications. However, I would like to include some local photos that were taken during home games at McMorran.
Thanks for any help you can offer. BTW, having made the transition from minor-pro to OHL junior hockey here in Saginaw, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of hockey and the physical game. Hopefully, things work out well for PH Fighting Falcons hockey team and local fans. I am looking forward to coming back to PH to check out a couple games.
